Wardrobe Guide for Professional Headshots

In a world where first impressions are often made online, a striking and professional headshot is a valuable asset. Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, creating a business website, or preparing for a professional event, your headshot can speak volumes about your personality and competence. To ensure you capture the essence of your professional self, careful preparation and thoughtful wardrobe choices are essential. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to prepare for your professional headshots and what to wear to leave a lasting impression.

Preparing for the Shoot:

1. Define the message you want to send:

Before stepping in front of the camera, consider the image you want to portray. Are you aiming for a corporate and serious look, a creative and approachable vibe, or something in between? Understanding your personal brand and career path will guide your decisions on clothing, accessories, and overall styling.

2. Grooming & Make-Up:

Schedule a haircut or trim a few days before your photo session to ensure a polished appearance. For a smooth complexion, consider light makeup for both men and women. Ensure your skin is well-moisturized, and your hair is well groomed.

3. Rest Up:

Adequate sleep is crucial to looking and feeling your best. Ensure you get a good night's sleep before your photo session to avoid tired eyes and a weary expression.

4. Practice Posing:

Stand in front of a mirror and practice different facial expressions and poses. Knowing your preferred angles and expressions can make you more comfortable in front of the camera.

5. familiarize yourself with your options and communicate:

Take some time to familiarize yourself with your photographer’s portfolio and style options. Discuss any specific preferences you may have and collaborate with your photographer to ensure the end result aligns with your vision.

Wardrobe:

1. Dress for Your Industry:

Your attire should align with the industry you're in. Creative industries may allow for more casual and trendy clothing, while corporate settings may require a more formal look.

2. choose colors wisely:

Solid colors work well for headshots as they are less distracting and allow the attention to be your face. Classic choices like black, white, navy, beige and gray are safe bets. If your session will include multiple looks I recommend an all-black outfit, an outfit of all light neutrals (beige & white or blue jeans and a white shirt), and/or an outfit with a signature color.

Consider Brand Colors: Take into account your company's visual brand identity and the context in which your headshot will be featured. Ensuring cohesion with your company's brand visuals will enhance the overall professionalism of your headshot.

Consider the Background: If you will be photographed in your office or on location, choose colors that are harmonious with that space.

Consider what Everyone Else is Wearing: Taking a group or team photo? Choose a cohesive color palette for everyone to adhere to.

3. Patterns and logos:

The safest bet is to steer clear of patterns and logos as they can distract from your face. The focus should be on you, not your clothing. Patterns can also accentuate wrinkles in clothing and be difficult to smooth out in the editing phase. However, there are a couple exceptions to this rule. Your company logo is one. Also, if bold patterns are a hallmark of your signature style then wearing one can help express your unique personality. If you decide to go that route consult with your photographer to choose one that will photograph well.

4. Accessorize Thoughtfully:

Minimalistic accessories can add a touch of personality without overpowering the photo. Consider a simple necklace, a watch, or subtle earrings. Large jewelry will take the focus away from your face. Layering can add depth and interest to your outfit. A blazer, cardigan, or scarf can add interest and additional look options.

5. DON’T FORGET THE BOTTOM HALF:

Headshots are not just head and shoulders. Dressing well from head to toe allows for a more modern variety of posing options and will put you in the right mindset.

COMMUNICATE, TRUST & RELAX

Professional headshots are invaluable in shaping your online presence and personal brand. By meticulously preparing and thoughtfully selecting your wardrobe, you can present the best version of yourself to the world. Remember to communicate openly with your photographer about your preferences, trust in their expertise, and relax during the session. Building a rapport and having fun with the process not only enhances the experience but also contributes to authentic and compelling headshots.
